Why even write this blog? Pens can't sign anyone bc flower and kuni are still on the books.

You just want us to fight with each other don't you

Free agency plan:

If Schultz is willing to take a big time pay cut and stay in the 2 - 2.3 mil range resign him and then sign a guy or two to stash in WBS for call up purposes.

If Schultz wants to stay in the 3 mil range, sign two boneheap defensemen for sub 1 mil contracts.

We don't need anything significant but we need depth. It'd be nice to get a top 6 LW, but it's not a big time necessity and I really can't see any way of making that happen.

I thought it was a good summation. Ek is the one that wants us to fight.

Pouliot has been mentioned a few times as NOT being Sullivan's type of player.

Has to be something related to his attitude and/or work ethic and seems like it's been an issue with more than one coaching staff here.

I'm guessing they are going to try and move him.

Penguins free agency plan is simple. Retain the majority of the players of a cup winning team and add small pieces around them.

Pens fans free agency plans are also simple. Act like the sky is falling because the one move you wanted didn't happen.

I agree. Trying to make a run at Shultz on a team friendly deal and then just wait out the market and snag a few quality depth players like Cullen/Stempniak that always get overlooked and end up signing minimum deals and then provide twice that in on-ice value.

Unless it's for another D they aren't moving him with lovejoy and Schuktz not resigning. And if they were going to move him the draft was the time to do it...

I think it also has a lot to do with Pouliot's style of play, Sullivan likes to play a fast North/South structured game but Pouliot's skills are more suited to freelancing and he's not the fastest player on the ice even though he's a very good skater. Simply being a offensive PMD doesn't necessarily mean he's a good fit in what the Pens want to do because other offensive PMD have excelled in the system.

They gotta make the fleury trade sooner rather than later.. With Daniel sprong pretty much done for the year.. The best course of action IMO would be to trade fleury for a young player with minimal salary to play on the right side of Malkin...

Although Rust played well with Malkin in the playoffs, he's better suited to play the 4th line RW... Kunitz' contract is done after this season so no need to move him... Guentzel and Dominik Simon will be his successors on the left wing...

Doing it at the draft only mattered if they were trying to get draft pick compensation in return, being that they will most likely be looking to do a player for player swap, the best time to make a more will be in the 4-6 weeks after teams miss out on FA targets they were trying to acquire and get desperate.

I know a lot of people on here like to complain about the Lovejoy for Despres trade, but it could have been worse...

At least the Pens didn't trade Forsberg for Martin freakin Erat...

I'm drawing a blank. is Simon a LH or RH shot? The WBS site has him listed as RH but other sites I've checked have him listed as LH.

It could have been a lot worse, we got a player in Lovejoy that was a top 4 on a Cup winning team and at times was the 3rd best defender on the ice for the Pens and we gave up a player that got grossly overpaid and may not even be protected in the upcoming expansion draft.

There really isn't a ton out there at this point. I know most will freak because of his age but I would consider Zdilicky at 1M-1.5M which will be the max he would get elsewhere. He's a RH shot and is capable of playing the style the Pens want to play. I could see him being the 2017 version of Matt Cullen.

Not sure what his shot is but he's a LW/C.
